I have written a book for the misery memoir market about a stepfamily in serious crisis. The book is unique as it is told as a dual narrative with my autobiographical story of reluctantly becoming a full-time stepmother almost overnight and the biographical story of Sam, my stepson's mother, finding out that she had lost her son while out on the streets because of her drug addiction. A brief description follows:

It was 1996 and Sam was high on drugs when she was told that her six year old son Ben had been sent to live with his father and that overnight his stepmother Nikki would became Ben's full-time carer. Follow the mirroring journey of each woman, as Sam tries to get clean and be a part of her son's life and Nikki, aged only 22, struggles to cope with her resentment at having to look after a difficult child under the unreliable shadow of his 'real' mother.

Sam and Nikki each jealously guarded their own role, resenting the presence of another woman in 'their' son's life. Only by supporting and validating the other mother did Sam and Nikki put years of fighting behind them to raise their son together and ultimately, become friends.
